Types of Over-The-Counter Pain Medications

Over-the-counter (OTC) pain medication is mostly used by athletes to recover from aches pains and injury. This is a most widely used medication. There are two types of Over-The-Counter pain relievers:

NSAIDs
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are those pain relievers, which prevent the body from manufacturing prostaglandins (A substance produced by body which acts as mediators for a variety of physiologic functions). It also decreases the pain and medication. NSAIDs include aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin), naproxen sodium (Aleve), and ketoprofen (Orudis KT).

Acetaminophen
Acetaminophen (Tylenol and Panadol) is a combination of two or more ingredients like caffeine or decongestants. It acts as a pain center in the brain. This is safest pain reliever because they don't block prostaglandins. Acetaminophen reduces pain and fever, but not inflammation. It is a recommended medicine for arthritis problem, as it doesn’t cause stomach irritation. High dosage of acetaminophen can lead to problems related to the liver, and rare reactions such as rash and urinary problems.
