Changes in Olympic Sports

There are number of games which are conducted in Olympic games in summer and winter Olympic games. There are 26 sports with 36 disciplines and around 300 events in Olympic games which are held in summer season. 7 sports with 15 disciplines and nearly 80 events in winter Olympics.

International Federation has to govern the sports to be made as Olympic sport. International Olympic Committee should recognize the such Federation. A branch of the Olympic sports is called as a discipline and it has one or more events. An event is a competition in a sport of Olympic of it's discipline.

If any sport or game is widely practiced throughout the world, then it is determined by the IOC to include into the list of the Olympic sports. Some times some of the sports are removed from the Olympic program which were included earlier like polo and tug of war. Because of the lack of interest or absence of an appropriate governing body, such sports will be discontinued or removed. Earlier tennis and archery were dropped and refurbished into the Olympic program. Other games such as baseball and softball were removed from Olympic program and again refurbished into program in 2006.

Recognized sports:

IOC recognized many sports, but it did not include in the Olympic program. IOC may add such recognized sports to the Olympic program through a recommendation in future.

Such sports are: Bandy, baseball, billiard sports, boules, bowling, bridge, chess, cricket, dance sport, floorball, golf, motor cycle racing, netball, orienteering, polo, roller sports, rugby, squash.

From one Olympiad to another, there will be a slight change in number of sports and type of sports.
