There are several ways to safely and charitably dispose of an old phone. First you should be aware of the fact that, in many states, throwing away an old phone is actually illegal. This is because the batteries in cell phones from the 1980's were made with the Nickel, Cadmium, which is considered as toxic. Newer cell phones have lithium batteries, these are also toxic but some what better than the Nickel and Cadmium.

When you have decided to buy a new cell phone, first you should dispose your old phone in a proper way. Like, keep your old phone as a back up, sell it to make some cash or donate it for some one to use. There are few things that you should consider, when disposing off your old phone for the safety of your identity and to protect the environment.
  1. First you should take the back up of your phone data, like photos, videos, and contacts to another mobile or PC.

So many agencies are offering disposing programs like, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency provides the information of recycle programs, which are near to your living place.
  6. Before you can throw it in a bin, remove the battery from the mobile to protect the environment and the health of global community. Because mobile phone and its battery consists of many plastic materials. They harm the environment, as they cannot be decomposed into the soil.
  7. Before you want to dispose your old phone, you should contact your mobile company for their recycle stores. Many companies provide recycle stores. For example, if you want to dispose your old Nokia phone, you should contact your nearest Nokia store. They will reuse the phone materials to manufacture new things.
